“Down Bad” by Taylor Swift, Sunday, May 19, 2024

It starts with a single and maybe a B-side, then an EP of 4-6 songs. This is often followed by more singles and more EPs. Finally, we get the full-length studio record which may be reworked versions of the early singles and songs from the EP. These artists often struggle to fill a full concert set because they don’t have enough material. They often resort to playing covers of songs that influenced their early career. However, somewhere along the way, an artist, should they last, becomes prolific. The frequency of singles, EPs, and full albums increases. In the past when this happened, the artist had passed their radio prime. But today, we have artists like Drake and Taylor Swift in their prolific period and in their commercial prime. Sometimes artists get big enough to release whatever they want, and that's what has seemed to happen with the latest from Taylor Swift, The Tortured Poets Department , released last month to record-breaking streaming numbers.   FUCK IT IF I CAN’T HAV

“C’est Comme Ça” by Paramore + Top Songs of 2023 #10-3, Tuesday, February 6, 2024

Back to our somewhat weekly countdown of the top songs of last year ranked completely unscientifically by me. Now that we’re in the top ten, these songs either have some critical acclaim or I think that they are critically underrated. These are songs that resonated with me at a time when I wasn’t particularly in the mood to digest a boygenius record--no shade to the extremely talented musicians. So sorry Phoebe Bridgers , Julien Baker , and Lucy Dacus --I hope to get into the record soon. Also, sorry for the exclusion of Sufjan Stevens and Taylor Swift . I was too sad to listen to Javelin and I just dropped Taylor’s “ I Can See Yo u” in favor of a song that was actually new in 2023. 10. “ Chasing That Feeling ” by Tomorrow X Together . I just added this song because it’s been one of my recent favorites. While K-pop girl groups FIFTY FIFTY and NewJeans and BTS soloist Jung Kook had a big year in international acclaim, I feel like TxT was a little lower-key than a few years ago

“Meltdown” by Niall Horan, Wednesday, May 31, 2023

Pop is having an incredible year. Starting out with Sam Smith 's genre- (and gender) blending Gloria to this month's yacht-rock inspired The Album by Jonas Brothers , what I once would consider guilty pleasures I would argue now rival the musical staples of my hipster past. The year isn't even half over, and I still haven't digested many of the albums that have come out. But if the two singles, " Heaven " and " Meltdown ," Niall Horan  released before his rumored June release of The Show  have any bearing on the upcoming album, I'll be adding this to my list of albums that completely blindsided me with awesomeness.  WHEN IT ALL MELTS DOWN, I'LL BE THERE. These days, I've been listening to Spotify's curated playlists at work. "Meltdown" is a song that has been added to several of the new hits playlists, so I started hearing it quite often. I thought the song was catchy, but it initially got lost with the other tons of songs

"Touch" by Troye Sivan, Thursday, September 9, 2021

TRXYE was Troye Sivan 's major label debut EP in 2014. The Australian singer had started his career in 2007 by posting videos of his songs on YouTube . Meanwhile, while his musical career was taking off, he started acting, playing roles in musicals, plays, and even landing the role of young Wolverine in X-Men Origins: Wolverine in 2009. TRXYE sees the teen singer grow up. The EP charted at #5 on the Billboard Top 200 , though his follow up, Wild , and debut studio album, Blue Neighborhoods,  would greatly overshadow the collection of songs on TRXYE. Perhaps less mature than Blue Neighborhoods and Bloom , songs like "Happy Little Pill," "Fun," "The Fault in Our Stars (MMXIV), and "Touch" remind listeners what is fun about electronic dream pop. Even if listeners missed this era of Troye Sivan, it's certainly worth a trip back to younger, less explicit, that's sexy without being explicitly so.  GLOW IS LOW AND IT'S DIMMING. The jazz pl
