"Closer" by Tegan and Sara (repost), Saturday, April 20, 2024

The best music doesn't happen in isolation but rather comes out of a community movement. I would define community, when it comes to music, as a mixing of artists who bring different ideas together ideas from various genres. The result of a musical community is stronger musicianship by all those involved. Collaboration, the meeting of minds, happens naturally. Throughout the course of my blog, I've talked about various communities.  Tooth & Nail , Christian Rock, and evangelical communities are definitely the biggest themes. Tegan and Sara grew out of the Northwestern Canadian/American Indie Rock community in the late '90s, and by 2013 became pop stars.   HERE COMES THE RUSH BEFORE WE TOUCH.  Many fans may have been introduced to  Tegan and Sara  when Meredith Grey and Christina Yang danced to their early acoustic,  angry girl music in  Grey's Anatomy ' s earlier seasons.  The musical duo of Calgary-born identical  twins  Tegan  and  Sara Quin  started on the aco

Formed in 1994 first as Shrug and then as Polarbear but finally changing their name to  Snow Patrol  due to other bands by their former names, the Northern Irish band became very popular in the early '00s. Their first single " Run " was a hit in the UK. But in America, the band would become famous because of their song " Chasing Cars " when it was included in the  season 2 finale of  Grey's Anatomy .  " Chasing Cars" is the song most people know by Snow Patrol, and most wouldn't be able to associate the name with their hit song. The band continues to produce music, most recently releasing 2018's  Wildness .    TRAIN THIS CHAOS, TURN IT INTO LIGHT . If you've had time to get into Taylor's Version of  Red ,  you may have noticed a feature by Snow Patrol's  Gary Lightbody . Once the Indie Rock band became recognized, the band members started working on pop music, and Lightbody writing for  Taylor Swift  and  Ed Sheeran . The Snow P

Ben Gibbard  started performing in 1997 under the moniker  Death Cab for Cutie , the name of a  Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band  song by the same name released in 1967 and featured in  The Beatles ’ film  Magical    Mystery   Tour . When Gibbard signed a recording contract, he turned his solo act into a band. The band released albums on indie label  Barsuk Records , garnering spots in films and television, which got the attention of  Atlantic Records . Their major label debut,  Plans , was released in 2005 and spawned three singles: " Soul Meets Body ," " Crooked Teeth ," and " I Will Follow You Into the Dark. " Despite being on a major label, Death Cab for Cutie is a symbol of Indie Rock music. They consistently produce thought-provoking music and have many Grammy nominations under their belt. However, like most bands with die-hard fans, their older records often resonate best, whether it's  We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes ,  Transatlanticism , or

“Such Great Heights” by The Postal Service, Wednesday, July 26, 2023

After 20 years, an album and a band can become legendary. However, in the case of The Postal Service , the legacy is attached to one album, Give Up , even centered on one single, " Such Great Heights ." The Postal Service was a side project of Death Cab for Cutie 's Ben Gibbard , producer Jimmy Tamborello , and backing vocals from Rilo Kiley 's guitarist and singer Jenny Lewis . But like older Death Cab for Cutie, The Postal Service and "Such Great Heights" is a bigger hit in the nostalgia of eventual fans, as Death Cab for Cutie's heyday with Plans in 2005 and being featured on television shows like The O.C. EVERYTHING LOOKS PERFECT FROM FAR AWAY. Ben Gibbard's venture into electronic music is a musical arc at least as old as The Beatles . But unlike The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and Strawberry Fields Forever , Gibbard didn't take the electronics to Death Cab for Cutie in 2003. Instead the same year that Death C

"(Christmas) Baby, Please Come Home" by Anberlin, Monday, December 5, 2022 (repost)

In 2010,  Rolling Stone   named Darlene Love 's 1963 song " (Christmas) Baby, Please Come Home " as the number 1 Christmas rock song ever recorded. Born Darlene Wright in 1941, and renamed Darlene Love by producer Phil Spector , Darlene began her musical career as the lead vocalist for the girl group the Blossoms. Besides her career with the Blossoms and her solo career, Love sang lead on two  Crystals  songs and back up for many notable artists including Sam Cooke , The Beach Boys , Elvis Presley , Sonny & Cher , and Tom Jones . Love has also acted on Broadway and appeared in the  Lethal Weapon   films.  Love performed "(Christmas) Baby, Please Come Home" every episode before Christmas on David Letterman from 1986-2014, except for 2007 during the writers' strike.  PRETTY LIGHTS ON THE TREE. "Baby, Please Come Home" has been covered by many artists including Mariah Carey ,  Michael Bublè , Death Cab for Cutie , Jars of Clay , among others. On

“monsoon “ by Hippo Campus, Tuesday, June 28, 2022

Hippo Campus ' debut record landmark comes five years into their career. A solid, unpretentious indie release, landmark is the perfect soundtrack to spring and summer. Musically, lead singer Jake Luppen in a hyper-aware, somewhat ironic lyric in the album's first full song " way it goes " describes the album as "easy going shit" in which the lead singer "just grab[s] a guitar and moan[s] and shit[s]." But while the "easy going" songs on landmark sound effortless, the lyrics certainly are not just nonsensical "moaning." Rich with imagery of time, color, and place, the songs on landmark start to become quite vibrant, showing the band's keen erudition in lyric writing. IT SHOULD'VE BEEN ME.     In the middle of the "easy going" record, Hippo Campus shares a somber moment on the track " monsoon ," which sounds a bit like it could fit in in the middle of Death Cab for Cutie 's Plans .  Rather than a

“To Be Alone with You” by Fleurie, Tuesday, April 26, 2022

Much of my blog is about nostalgia for different times in my life. Unless you are a futurist, most art is about the past. The ‘80s movies that I grew up watching were about events that happened in the ‘60s and the movies from the ‘90s were about the ‘70s. But suddenly I wake up one day and ‘00s nostalgia is a thing, in music or in the television. So when Hulu adapted John Green ’s 2005 debut novel  Looking for Alaska into an eight-part mini series , the writers and producers decided to keep the series set in the time of its publication, the early ‘00s. To build a believable setting to the young adult series, the producers created a soundtrack full of songs and covers of songs from the era. The soundtrack as released on streaming services was only a fraction of the music features in the series. Tracks by The Strokes , Phantom Planet , Modest Mouse, and Coldplay could be heard in the show, while covers of well-known hits of that time also appeared on the soundtrack. The original songs

"Cold Air" by Acceptance + Reaction to When We Were Young Festival Announcement+ Playlist, Thursday, January 20, 2022

Yesterday, I woke up to an announcement in my Instagram feed: a dream concert in Las Vegas later this year in October. Headlined by My Chemical Romance and Paramore , and featuring over 60 emo and punk bands over the span of one day, this one-day event is quite mind-blowing. Of course there's no way I'll be in Vegas on October 22nd, but this is pretty much my dream concert, other than Cornerstone magically resurrecting. In fact, the concert line-up seems a little too good to be true for many scene fans, leading to online speculation that this is the Emo Fyre festival. I thought it would be fun today to make a playlist for this festival with one song representing each band. I thought it would be fun also to see 1) how many bands I've talked about in my blog post, 2) how many I haven't listened to in years, 3)how many I'm only kind of aware of, and 4)how many I've never heard of. And that's the order we'll proceed. First of all, I'm sad that Las Vegas
