It’s a clear chilly night. It’s been a rainy year, and the city lights rarely allow for a peak into oblivion. Today, I give you my playlist for those occasions, when the clouds open up and we can look into another world. Most of these songs are not scientific, but rather impressions and mediations on an otherworldly experience. Enjoy!

Last year, I listened to a podcast introducing artists who sound similar to another artist in order to help expand lesser-known artists expand their fan bases just to hear some takes that the commentators had to say about another artist I was preparing to post about. I didn't actually end up writing about that artist, but I inadvertently discovered a few new artists to add to my AppleMusic library, one of which was Filipina-British singer-songwriter  Beatrice  Kristi Ilejay Laus , better known by her stage name  beabadoobee . BUILDINGS AND RUST.   With over 17 million monthly listeners on Spotify, bedroom pop singer beabadoobee opened for  Taylor Swift  last year on a leg of the Eras Tour. Laus is just one of many artists that Swift was probably introduced to through rumored ex,  The 1975 ’s Matty Healy .  Born in Iloilo City in 2000 and relocating to London with her family at the age of three, Laus was influenced by indie rock from an early age. At the age of seventeen, she learne

As promised, here is my Top 10 list for albums of the year. It’s a bit late and I’m sure that in time, the importance of this list will change and that albums I hadn’t listened to would chart. I decided to give preference to the albums I blogged about most but I also slipped in a few that I thought would be culturally significant. There were a few cuts that I thought hurt a little, Olivia Rodrigo ’s GUTS , the Barbie: The Album soundtrack, and boygenius ’s The Record .   I wanted to include some albums that didn’t make the critics’ picks lists to give light to some underrated artists. I hope you enjoy these albums as much as I did—and am doing now. 10. The Show by Niall Horan . It’s funny how the other One Direction members have been totally eclipsed by Harry Styles . While Styles is certainly talented, and his production team has incorporated some of the most interesting elements into mainstream pop, former bandmate Niall Horan has been sadly overlooked. The Show is an album by an

“Music for a Sushi Restaurant” by Harry Styles (updated repost, warning: frank discussion of specific sexual acts), Sunday, February 4, 2024

Harry Styles ' third record  Harry's House   grabs listeners with a funky '70s-Jazz-influenced track, " Music for a Sushi Restaurant ." The avant-garde production, scatting, horns, and minimal (though somewhat complexly layered in meaning) lyrics are simultaneously the most and least pop way to start a record.  Harry's House  is a record that jumps all over the place stylistically track to track, yet "Music for a Sushi Restaurant" is a bombastic-themed track--horns, '70s-inspired tracks--to an otherwise laidback singer. But the imagery of a girl so hot you could fry an egg on her?  What a bizarre way to open an album, and possibly a little unappetizing. MUSIC FOR A SUSHI RESTAURANT, MUSIC FOR WHATEVER YOU WANT.   Musicologist   Nate Sloan   and songwriter   Charlie Harding   talked about the horn themes on   Harry's House  on their podcast   Switched on Pop .  The duo made the connection between Styles' recent inclusion of horns on the re

Harry Styles made his film debut in Christopher Nolan ’s 2017 World War II film, Dunkirk . It was a small role as a soldier, but it wasn’t the last time Styles would touch the silver screen. Last year, Harry starred in two films, the romantic thriller Don’t Worry Darling and the gay romantic historical fiction My Policeman based on the novel by Bethan Roberts . In Don’t Worry Darling, Styles starred as a lead actor, his character Jack married to Florence Plough ’s Alice. The film was directed by Olivia Wilde , who also appears as a main character, Bunny. The film reviewed poorly, with a 38% on Rotten Tomatoes . DARLING, IS IT COOL IF I’M STUBBORN WHEN IT COMES TO THIS? While the Austin Chronicle may have called Don’t Worry Darling “a swing and a miss,” the film generated a lot of media attention due to Shia LaBeouf's firing from the role of Jack, for which Harry Styles took the role; alleged screaming matches director/actress Olivia Wilde and lead actress Florence Plough; an
