“Heavy” by Linkin Park ft. Kiiara, Wednesday, November 13, 2024 (trigger warning: suicide, depression, mental health discussion)

Linkin Park ’s Hybrid Theory was a musical philosophy the band has followed throughout their career. Hip-hop, hard rock, nu-metal, Alternative, folk, and electronic— all found their way onto Linkin Park albums. A band known for their cross-genre collaborations and for scoring Top 40 Pop hits, Linkin Park has always aimed to be music-forward. In 2017, the band released their most polarizing album, One More Light . The album more than any of the band’s previous efforts integrated current-sounding pop, a genre that Linkin Park had avoided even when their rock songs became pop hits. Critics and listeners didn’t know what to think of the latest from the band that defined the new millennium in rock music. It was a collection of songs that seemed lyrically honest but musically dishonest like much of the pop music of the late ‘10s.   I DON’T LIKE MY MIND RIGHT NOW. Starting the album cycle for One More Light was “ Heavy ,” the lead single, released in February 2017. Working with the songwri

“Heavy Is the Crown” by Linkin Park, Thursday, October 10, 2024

There were a few big rock stories that I’ve failed to cover in the last month or so. Oasis needs money, so brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher put aside their differences to do a world tour. Dave Grohl has been canceled for fathering a child outside of his marriage putting the Foo Fighters on indefinite hiatus following the backlash, and Jane’s Addiction will go on hiatus after lead singer Perry Farrell punched guitarist Dave Navarro in the middle of a song on stage. Linkin Park announced a new lead singer, a new album, and a world tour, and the reactions are divided. Seven years after the suicide of lead singer Chester Bennington , Linkin Park live-streamed an announcement that they had chosen Emily Armstrong , of the band Dead Sara as their new lead singer. The band’s defacto leader Mike Shinoda told BBC1 One : “ This is intended to be a new chapter of Linkin Park.” The band hoped to celebrate the band’s hits and move forward in a new direction. THIS IS WHAT YOU ASKED FOR…

“Chasing Shadows” by Alex Warren, Saturday, September 14, 2024

Alex Warren was nine years old when his father died of terminal kidney cancer. Before his passing, Warren’s dad left Alex with a love for music. Alex’s father bought his son a Fender guitar and introduced him to the music ‘90s and ‘00s groups such as Coldplay , Train , and Linkin Park . His mother’s alcoholism after his father’s death caused Alex to leave home as a teenager, even sleeping in a friend’s car for a time. Alex pursued music in the age of YouTube , Instagram , and TikTok . In 2019, he was a founding member of a teen TikTok collective called The Hype House . In 2021, he began releasing music. His first single, “ One More I Love You ” dealt with his father’s death. Warren signed to Atlantic Records in 2022 and has released music steadily while creating other content on YouTube and TikTok. THEN YOUR SHADOW GROWS LONGER ON THE GROUND. Yesterday, Alex Warren announced his debut album will be released on September 27th. You’ll Be Alright Kid (Chapter 1) will feature ten tracks

“I! Only! Wanna! Live! Forever!” by Fleurie, Friday, July 26, 2024 (repost)

Fleurie   is just shy of 3 million monthly listeners on Spotify. The Nashville-based singer-songwriter's majority of listeners, though, come from outside the United States from India, Turkey, Brazil, and Germany to be precise. Two years ago I talked about her cover of   Sufjan Steven 's   " To Be Alone with You ," which appears in the   Looking for Alaska   mini-series. While Fleurie has released many covers including a haunting version   Linkin Park 's " In the End " and   Gary Jules ' arrangement of   Tears for Fears ' " Mad World ," the singer also writes original songs and released her fourth LP earlier this year titled   Supertropicali .  CALIFORNIA GIRLS DON'T LOOK LIKE ME.  How to describe Fleurie's latest album,  Supertropicali?  Fleurie describes it on her Spotify page as "a world, an era, a story unfolding, all stitched together in '90s nostalgia, romance, youthful hope, and belonging." Taking inspirati

“Faint” by Linkin Park (repost), Sunday, June 23, 2024

Twenty-one years ago,  Linkin Park  released their sophomore record,  Meteora .    Throughout the band's career, their sound would shift to various styles of rock music, but  Meteora  is not much of a departure from the band's debut  Hybrid Theory .  The album did, however, embrace Asian musical instruments on several tracks. At the time of its release,  Meteora  not only debuted at number 1 on  Billboard's 200 Album charts  but also set the record for the most units sold in a week beating  Celine Dion 's  One Heart .  In 2003, Nu Metal was the ruling dynasty and Linkin Park was the king of the music. I CAN'T FEEL THE WAY I DID BEFORE.  Speaking of deluxe editions, you can stream Linkin Park's 20th anniversary edition of  Meteora-- 95 tracks of live performances, B-sides, and demos; some of which have been released like their  Live in Texas   record and some remastered tracks which had never left the vault. Personally, I don't have fond memories of this reco

“Intro the Gravity” by Falling Up, Wednesday, November 29, 2023

On October 25, 2005, Falling Up released their sophomore record, Dawn Escapes . The album, produced by Michael “Elvis” Baskette , varies from the band’s Hybrid-Theory - inspired debut Crashings . Rather than maintaining the momentum of the synth-driven rock on Crashings, the band’s sophomore effort focuses on a dreamy ambiance enhanced with hard rock guitars. The first single from the album, “ Exit Calypsan ” (Only in My Dreams)--released earlier in 2005 on the Christian Rock compilation X2005 -- is slower than the singles from Crashings. The chorus brings heavy guitars in to keep Falling Up a rock band. Dawn Escape ’s second single, “ Moonlit ”; however, broke the band’s electronic formula and gave them a riff-heavy rocker. With the two singles preceding the album, listeners were treated to a dreamy experience that perfectly wrapped the dichotomous songs. THIS PLACE I PASS. The album cover of Crashings showed a fresh-faced six-peace band. According to their cover artwork, Falling Up
