“Anything But Me” by MUNA, Wednesday, October 25, 2023

In 2020, MUNA was dropped by their label RCA for “ not making enough money .” The queer-identifying trio had modest success with their first two records,   About U and Saves the World , but they would actually achieve a higher level of success on an indie label. The key to this renewed success was by partnering with an indie rock darling who had come to be known as a “serial collaborator” due to appearing on a range of projects from Paul McCartney to Taylor Swift . Phoebe Bridgers signed MUNA to her label Saddest Factory and functioned as the trio’s A&R person. MUNA quickly expanded their listener base with the hit featuring Bridgers, “ Silk Chiffon .” The song preceded  MUNA’s eponymous album by more than nine months and became the band’s most-streamed song. In March of 2022, MUNA released the second single from the album, “ Anything But Me .” YOU’RE GONNA SAY I ASKED FOR THE MOON. While MUNA is certainly overshadowed by Phoebe Bridgers and her own trio, boygenius , touring

“Heather” by Conan Gray, Wednesday, October 11, 2023

Conan Gray released his debut album, Kid Krow , in 2020. The album entered Billboard’s 200 Album chart at number 5, the highest position for a debut artist in 2020. But artists with such a successful debut rarely come out of nowhere. Gray began uploading his songs to YouTube in 2013 when he was 15. His channel gained many followers for his vlogs about everyday life growing up in Texas; however, eventually he began writing and recording music in 2017. I STILL REMEMBER THE THIRD OF DECEMBER. California-born and Texas-raised on a musical diet of Taylor Swift , Lorde , and Lana Del Rey , Teen Vogue called Conan Gray “the pop prince for sad internet teens.” Republic Records signed Gray based on his online presence and the streaming success of his early singles. The singer performed on Late Night with Seth Meyers in 2019 and later opened for Panic! at the Disco’ Pray for the Wicked Tour on a few dates. Kid Krow was promoted by two singles: “ Maniac ,” which “bubbled under the Hot 10

“Mood Ring” by Lorde, Wednesday, August 9, 2023

There is little new under the sun when it comes to fashion. In the '00s, '90s fashion of flannels and winter bubble vests gave way to a '70s revival: Bell bottoms or flares, replaced the straight-leg Levis; bold colors replaced the subdued primary colors of the '90s; and gimmicky accessories like bandanas and hoop earrings made a bold statement. Some novelty fashion trends also came back, enter the mood ring. On Lorde 's 2021 record Solar Power , the singer wistfully remembers relics of her childhood in the early '00s in the song " Mood Ring ." Lyrically satirizing the disconnection of the modern world, the acoustic guitar producer Jack Antonoff plays throughout the song harken back to the early '00s pop music.    YOU CAN BURN THE SAGE, AND I'LL CLENSE THE CRYSTALS.    Discussing the first single Lorde dropped from   her third album "Solar Power," Switched on Pop guest Hanif Abdurraqid argues that Lorde isn't a "singer-sin

“Karma” (Remix) by Taylor Swift ft. Ice Spice, Wednesday, June 7, 2023

I would argue that since reputation , Taylor Swift has made a career based on revenge. The singer-songwriter is extremely intentional and calculated when releasing new singles and albums. Most recently, Swift released yet another deluxe edition of Midnights , this time calling it The Til Dawn Edition , featuring a new song and two remixes. When she first released Midnights in October of last year, many listeners were wondering what was different about the album. It felt like reputation but the singer was in a steady relationship with English actor Joe Alwyn , and everything was going great, right? right? KARMA IS A CAT PURRING ON MY LAP. When tabloids started reporting that Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn had split in early April this year, the pointed lyrics of Midnights started to make a little more sense. Was Swift reacting to the expectations--from others or even Alwyn-- that their relationship should end in marriage? Could the singer stay in a "1950s shit" " Lavender Ha

“Solar Power” by Lorde, Wednesday, March 29, 2023

Today, we have another offering from our Lorde and Saviour, Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O'Connor, aka "the prettier Jesus." In January, we talked about the opening track on Solar Power , " The Path ," in which Lorde claims not to be, well a lord for her fans and followers. By the next track, the titular track, however, Lorde points to " Solar Power " but admits that she is "like a prettier Jesus." The answer to the singer's problems lies in the sun and ultimately in nature. NO SHIRT, NO SHOES, ONLY MY FEATURES. "Solar Power" was the summer anthem that never caught on.  Lorde released her third record Solar Power  at the end of the second summer (winter for New Zealand) of the pandemic, 2021, with the titular lead single coming out on June 20th before the record's release on August 20th.  It's hard for me to distinguish time during the pandemic, and each nation dealt with the pandemic differently, completely shattering any s

" My my, hey hey / Rock 'n' Roll is here to stay" declares  Neil Young  in his 1978 song.  Rock music has had lasting presence in pop culture since the age of  Chuck Berry  and   Little Richard . Some points in the '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, and '00s the genre took the primary spots on radio charts outside of the genre. However, around the end of the '00s, Hip Hop decimated the genre. The rock bands left standing, mostly traded their axes for acoustic guitar, keyboards, EDM beats, or Trap rhythms. Much of the rock music was indistinguishable from other genres, and that trend continues into the 2020s. However, just as rock bands cross over to the pop charts, the late 2010s to 2021 is seeing pop singers experiment with rock music. From  Miley Cyrus   performing   with  Metallica  to rappers like  Post Malone  and  Machine Gun Kelly  flirting with emo, some may argue that Rock is seeing a mainstream resurgence. Enter  Olivia Rodrigo 's " goo

MUNA  is an alternative pop group composed of three friends who studied together at the  University of Southern California . The trio self-produced their debut EP and uploaded it to  Bandcamp  and  SoundCloud . The band's success with their debut EP led to the group signing with  RCA  records and releasing their 2017 debut record,  About U.   In May 2021, the band announced that they had signed to  Phoebe Bridgers '  Saddest Factory  record label. The group recently released the single " Silk Chiffon " which features Bridgers singing a verse.
