“Let Me Prepare You” by Watashi Wa, Wednesday, December 28, 2022 + My Top 10 albums of the year

Coming to the end of the year, it's time to remember some of the musical highlights of 2022. I listened to a lot of music this year and maybe more new music than last year. But there certainly were albums that slipped under the radar. I had every intention of digging into  The Weeknd 's  Dawn FM   , but somehow I was never in that dark of a mood to resonate with the characteristics of that record. Today, I'm going to reveal my controversial list. Enjoy! #10 . The Loneliest Time  by Carly Rae Jepsen . The latest from the " Call Me Maybe " singer is a record that isn't immediately catchy and could easily fall between the cracks of all the big releases of this year. The diverse singles showed different camera angles of a maturing pop singer who has solidified her status in music nerd-dom and gay music listeners alike. And with her first explicit labeled song, Jepsen is distancing herself from former tween-friendly aesthetic. I'm sure next year I'll be d

"If U Love Me Now" by MUNA, Monday, October 31, 2022 (updated repost) Trigger Warning: Suicide

Muna 's 2017 record  About U  takes listeners on a rollercoaster of emotion. Unlike their 2019  Saves the World   record,  About U  focuses on the positive and negative of being in love and breaking up.  About U  doesn't enjoy the near universal acclaim that their follow up has, but album helped to establish the three-piece band of queer musicians on the scene of Alternative dark synth pop. Today the sadness, desperation, and loneliness of " If U Love Me Now " resonated with the sadness felt by the nation of South Korea after the tragic events of Saturday night  in which at least 153 people lost their loves, crushed in a stampede during Halloween festivities. While today's song doesn't deal with the topic of tragedy, it is a very sad song, so I think it reflects my feelings about an otherwise beautiful Halloween day. IT'S JUST A HYPOTHESIS I TEST. “If U Love Me Now”  explores the theme of mental illness and suicide. The singer explores options before tel

MUNA ’s third and self-titled album is due on June 24th. Their album gives their single from last September, “ Silk Chiffon ,” a home. The band has also released three other singles from the 11-track album. Yesterday, MUNA released a non-album track, a cover of Britney Spears ’ 1999 bubblegum ballad “ Sometimes ” for the Hulu original film Fire Island , also released yesterday. The film was written by and stars comedian Joel Kim Booster and co-stars the Saturday Night Live 's openly gay comedian Bowan Yang in a modern queer re-telling of Jane Austin's Pride and Prejudice set in New York's legendary LGBTQ+ haven. BABY, ALL I NEED IS TIME.   “Sometimes” is Britney Spears’ second single from her debut record, ...baby one more time . Following her smash #1 hit “ …Baby One More Time ,” “Sometimes” takes a more laidback adult contemporary sound. Like many of the songs on Britney’s debut record, “Sometimes” was produced by Max Martin and written by another Swedish songwriter

In 2015 when marriage equality was signed into law across the nation, Americans reacted in several ways. There was overt homophobia and blatant hatred often disguised as religion.  One of the last Adventist sermons I listened to was Dwight Nelson arguing that just because a nation can say something is legal doesn't make it moral.  There were   examples of civil disobedience in the courtrooms by the likes of Kim Davis refusing to perform same-sex weddings. There were businesses that refused service to same-sex couples getting married. Many took the law as a win for human rights. Statistics showed in 2015 that support for marriage equality was largely bi-partisan, meaning that people of all backgrounds, liberal or conservative, supported the right to marry. support for the victims following the  Pulse shooting in Orlando YOU TRIED TO SHRUG IT OFF WHEN I ASKED WHY SOMEBODY HURT YOU. Then came June 12, 2016. When I heard the news, it was my 29th birthday-Korean Standard Time June 13th.

“Chasing Cars” by Snow Patrol, Wednesday, February 9, 2022 + Romantic Mix 2022 Spotify Edition

Image
The second single from the 2006 album Eyes Open  after the album opener and rocker, " You're All I Have ," "Chasing Cars" is the most recognized song by  Snow Patrol . The band's frontman and songwriter Gary Lightbody said that he wrote the song after sobering up after a white wine binge in the garden of producer Jacknife Lee 's cottage. Lightbody told Rolling Stone  that "Chasing Cars" is "the purest love song I've ever written. There's no knife-in-the-back twist." He stated that "all the other songs I've written have a dark edge." While the song and video for "Chasing Cars" don't have a dark side, the connotation the song has with dramas like Grey's Anatomy and One Tree Hill  certainly wields the knife so carefully left out by the songwriter.  LET'S WASTE TIME CHASING CARS. As tempting as it is to make a Bad Romance playlist or Sad Romance playlist, I've decided to make my Spotify al

2021+ Playlist Edition featuring "Counterfeit" by Wolves at the Gate and 41 other songs, Saturday, January 8, 2022

I decided to do something a little different today. I'm going to present my first playlist within a playlist: 2021+. When my friend Stephen Barry  chooses his top songs of a given year, he gives two years of wiggle room for the records he missed. My format is not like Mr Barry and his Orchestra , but I thought that it would be interesting to make a playlist of the best songs I blogged about about last year that fit within a two year time frame. I'm going to stick to one entry per artist as usual and leave links for the posts. Today's song, "Counterfeit" by Wolves at the Gate, comes from a 2019 album, so it barely makes the list. First, I will post the Spotify playlist: The songs listed on this playlist: 1. " Cold Air " by Acceptance. The lead single from 2020's Wild, Free  is a song about a community torn apart by prejudice. Also check out " Wasted Nights " and " Dark Age. " 2. " Counterfeit " by Wolves at the Gate fro
