“The Tortured Poets Department” by Taylor Swift, Sunday, June 2, 2024

Last year Taylor Swift was in the middle of a whirlwind romance with the frontman The 1975 , Matty Healy , allegedly. This romance came after Swift broke up with actor Joe Alwyn after a six-year relationship. Swift and Healy’s relationship has never been confirmed by Swift or Healy, but the press surrounding the two and neither’s denial of the affair has cemented the relationship in pop culture canon. The spring fling was said to have lasted for a month, possibly a fortnight . All of this was happening in the middle of Swift’s Midnights Era—songs about life experiences that supposedly happened in the past. Some listeners have interpreted Midnights as a breakup album. LIKE A TATTOOED GOLDEN RETRIEVER.  Fans were eagerly awaiting for Taylor Swift to reward their Easter Egg hunt with the release of The Tortured Poets Department , the album that she announced when she won Album of the Year at the 2024 Grammy Awards. The Easter Eggs Swift gave fans and the press led listeners to believe

It starts with a single and maybe a B-side, then an EP of 4-6 songs. This is often followed by more singles and more EPs. Finally, we get the full-length studio record which may be reworked versions of the early singles and songs from the EP. These artists often struggle to fill a full concert set because they don’t have enough material. They often resort to playing covers of songs that influenced their early career. However, somewhere along the way, an artist, should they last, becomes prolific. The frequency of singles, EPs, and full albums increases. In the past when this happened, the artist had passed their radio prime. But today, we have artists like Drake and Taylor Swift in their prolific period and in their commercial prime. Sometimes artists get big enough to release whatever they want, and that's what has seemed to happen with the latest from Taylor Swift, The Tortured Poets Department , released last month to record-breaking streaming numbers.   FUCK IT IF I CAN’T HAV

The 1975 released their fifth album Being Funny in a Foreign Language in October 2022. The production of the album had been delayed because of the Covid-19 pandemic. The album was slated to be produced by BJ Burton . Lead singer Matty Healy was a fan of Burton’s production  work on Bon Iver ’s 22, A Million and Low ’s Double Negative and Hey What . However, there were creative differences between the producer and the band. The 1975 began working with producer Jack Antonoff ; known for his work with Lana Del Rey , Taylor Swift , and Lorde ; which ended the production sessions with Burton. Antonoff builds on the art rock direction The 1975 had been working on throughout their discography. Their previous album, Notes on a Conditional Form , had experimented with classical music. Antonoff took the band in a jazzier direction. THERE WAS SOMETHING ABOUT YOU THAT NOW I CAN’T REMEMBER. Jack Antonoff brings a more even sound to The 1975’s Being Funny in a Foreign Language. It’s been an interesting year for The 1975 , to say the least. While frontman Matty Healy ’s habit of shit-posting and provocative goofball answers in interviews had been a norm for the band, polarizing fans of the band, earlier this year Healy’s alleged relationship with Taylor Swift made the band even higher profile. While the two are (supposedly) no longer romantically entangled, last week Healy’s controversial antics made global news headlines again. I CAN’T BELIEVE I FORGOT YOUR NAME. Last weekend, Matty Healy and the 1975 had a festival in Malaysia canceled and the band, including Healy, was banned from the country. The reason had to do with protesting the country's controversial anti-LGBTQ+ laws. Following a rant about the laws put in place by the country's Muslim majority, Healy took bandmate Ross MacDonald and kissed the band's bassist. Reactions around the world to Healy and the company's protest have been mixed. First to criticize the band was Malaysia'
