"The Coldest Heart" by The Classic Crime, Tuesday, December 12, 2023 (Repost)

I talked before about how  Albatross ,  The Classic Crime 's debut album  was set to be the breakthrough mainstream album for both the band and for  Tooth & Nail Records . And of course, neither of those happened because someone at iTunes or Tooth & Nail or  EMI  or any combination released this record in the genre "Christian Rock." Of the two 2006 secular signings of Tooth & Nail,  Jonezetta  avoided Christian radio, but The Classic Crime admitted defeat and even embraced the genre. With an album like  Albatross,  it would be hard to hear the songs and not think of Christian Rock. " The Coldest Heart " is a bit Calvinistic for the general music listener. A COUPLE OF TEARS AND I'M A BROKEN MESS.  "The Coldest Heart" belongs to a sub-genre of Christian Rock I've heard called " Shamecore , " a term coined by licensed professional counselor Krispin Mayfield on his podcast The Prophetic Imagination Station .   Shamecore comes

“We’ve Only Just Begun” by Run Kid Run, Monday, November 20, 2023

In 1996, David Josiah Curtis and friends formed a punk band called Side Walk Slam . The Southern Illinois-based band released an independent record, Rock Anthems from the Midwest , in 1999 before signing to a small label, Boot to Head Records , and releasing Two Steps Forward, Five Steps Back the next year. Then in 2001, the band signed with Tooth & Nail Records and released three records between 2001 and 2003. Little by little, the bare-bones punk rock band started incorporating more and more production on their records. By their 2003 record, And We Drive , the band even included a piano. It was after releasing And We Drive, that the band decided that Side Walk Slam had strayed from their Punk Rock sound so much that they decided to change their name, rebranding with a new sound and retiring the expectations that the band would sound a particular way.  YOU’LL HAVE YOUR UPS AND DOWNS. Run Kid Run released their debut record This Is Who We Are three years after Side Walk Slam r

I magine being a new band in 2019, releasing your first EP which has earned enough hype to put you on a big tour with a veteran band, only to have that tour canceled because the industry came to a halt with the pandemic. That’s what happened to brothers Sam and Ben Taylor and their friend Nathan Beaton of Paradise Now . The Welsh band did not tour with Disciple in 2020 as planned, however, they released an extra EP called Lockdown Mixtape to lead up to their full-length debut, We Never Die , both released in 2021. The band's social media has been quiet since the release of the LP . IT’S GETTING OLD. In 2019, Tooth & Nail Records revealed that they had signed a new band. The label posted a photo of the band's silhouette and asked fans to guess who had been signed. I commented " dc talk ?" which got a few laughs from the community. Sometimes when a band is signed with Tooth & Nail Records, listeners know who the band is. Often it's a band connected to the

“Someday” by Aaron Sprinkle ft. Matty Mullins + Real Life Track by Track, Friday, November 10, 2023

In 2017, Aaron Sprinkle released Real Life , his last release on Tooth & Nail Records . The legendary producer had released solo work sporadically since the ‘90s; however, being the go-to producer for some of the most successful bands in Alternative and Hard Christian Rock was time-consuming, and Sprinkle felt that producing great records was more successful than trying to promote a solo career. Sprinkle’s production always felt cutting-edge when he recorded, whether for Anberlin , Acceptance , Demon Hunter , Falling Up , or a host of other bands. Real Life, however, feels very 2017. Today, let's explore the album, track by track. 1. Invincible kicks off the album with that 2017 electronic sound. Featuring Poema ’s Elle Puckett contributing a spoken-word/ rap part, the song sounds nothing like what you’d expect from either artist. The lyrics seem to be the speaker coming to realize that he is not invincible. Puckett tries to convince the first speaker that he never needed to

“Can’t Go Home” by The Juliana Theory (repost), Thursday, November 9, 2023

Thomas Wolfe is most famous for his novel  You Can't Go Home Again   which is a tome that I haven't read. However, I did read his first novel,  Look Homeward, Angel ,  which deals with similar themes. I picked up the book in the middle of a semester from hell and an existential crisis. I found Wolfe's descriptions of Southern life--the people in town and family members, the scenery, and the food--so comforting. The mostly autobiographical novel is nostalgic, but the protagonist, Eugene's academic pursuits push him to see the world outside of the isolated mountain town of Altamont (Asheville). DEFER TOMORROW.  The Juliana Theory  is a band whose influence far exceeds its success. Formed as the side project of  Brett Detar , the guitarist of the Christian metal band  Zao , when he wanted to incorporate the catchiness of radio rock bands like  Third Eye Blind  that the metal band listened to in van on tour, The Juliana Theory became a legendary band in the pop-punk scene.

“Through It All” by Spoken, Sunday, November 5, 2023

Six years after releasing their eponymous sixth album, Spoken released Illusion on E1 Records, a New York-based independent record label. The band began work on their 2013 album back in 2009, recording with Jasen Rauch . By their seventh album, Spoken had become a veteran band, having formed in 1996. The band’s rough recordings on Christian pop star Crystal Lewis ’ label Metro One produced several hits for Christian hard rock radio such as RadioU . Of these recordings, only their 2000 record, Echos of the Spirit Still Dwell is available on Spotify and Apple Music. In 2003, the band signed with Tooth & Nail Records . I SAW THE STORM, FELT THE WINDS BEGIN TO CHANGE.  With the partnership between Spoken and Tooth & Nail Records, the band developed their sound with bigger production budgets. The development of Spoken’s sound over the course of the three Tooth & Nail albums impacted the band until their most recent singles in 2020. Starting with the droll, mid-western roc
