"She's Always a Woman" (Billy Joel cover) by Copeland, Sunday, April 3, 2022

Artists often show off their influences when they play a cover. In 2004, Copeland released an EP of covers of songs by singer-songwriters from the '70s and '80s. While the band has moved into more experimental territory in recent years, know nothing stays the same shows the musical education, the melodies, the song structure from which Copeland came. Today's song was written by Billy Joel and released in 1977, and Billy Joel's version appears on the Spotify and AppleMusic version of the April 2022 Mixtape because know nothing stays the same is a rare Copeland release. Copeland's covers EP is worth checking out, though. Hearing the band's unique take on the soft rock classics gave me a new appreciation for the band when I heard this EP, and I only wish it was more widely available.

THE WORST SHE CAN DO IS THROW SHADOWS AT YOU. Now we come to Under the Covers, Volume 3 (see below), naturally another YouTube Edition to the playlist because the main song on which the playlist is based is unavailable on streaming services. This time, I decided to stick to (mostly) artists I've talked about this year, expanding this time to one of the best covers this artist has recorded or the best cover that I've found of this artist's song. I put this list together rather quickly, probably overlooking some artists. I guess there will need to be a Volume 4 at some point. I'll list the track listing and give a link to the original or best-known version of the song.

1. "She's Always a Woman" by Copeland, originally by Billy Joel--today's song.
2. "Livin' on a Prayer" by Switchfoot (Bon Jovi cover). Switchfoot covered this song before they opened for Bon Jovi on tour.
3. "With or Without You" by Kye Kye (U2 cover)
4. "Ocean Avenue" by Tyler Ward & Jada Facer (Yellowcard Cover)--a fairly chill version of the Yellowcard classic.
5. "Everywhere" by Yellowcard (Michelle Branch cover)

6. "Don't Stop Believin'" by Number One Gun (Journey cover). I was curious about this track when I wrote about it last week. Not available on Apple or Spotify. Only on YouTube until someone takes it down.
7. "Fallin'" by Mutemath (Alicia Keys cover)
8. “Soak Up the Sun” by Judah & the Lion (Sheryl Crow cover)
9. “The Scientist” by Alex Groot & Jada Facer (Coldplay cover)
11. “Misery Business” by Machine Gun Kelly & Travis Barker (Paramore cover). Not sure that I’m completely on board with this one
12. “Royals” by Paper Route (Lorde cover).
Paper Route announced a covers series and only released this song and Destiny Child’s “Say My Name.”

13.“March of the Pigs” by Mae (Nine Inch Nails cover). This is an uncharacteristic cover by Mae.
14. “Enjoy the Silence” by Anberlin (Depeche Mode cover). Anberlin didn’t include this song on Never Take Friendship Personal because they didn’t want to become the band to have a cover on every album. So the song ended up on the Punk Goes ‘90s compilation.

16. “I Love You Always Forever” by Mike Mains & the Branches (Donna Lewis cover). There’s also an excellent cover by Betty Who.
17. “2Shy” by Mumford & Sons (Shura cover)
18. “The Meaning of You” by IU ft. Kim Chang Wan (Sanillium cover). Sometimes a songwriter may appear in the remake.
19. “Lovesong” by Adele (The Cure cover)
20. “ Say Something” by Eric Nam & Boa Kim (A Great Big World & Christina Aguilera cover)

21. “Brother” by Jensen Ackles (Needtobreathe cover). An impressive live-concert cover from the Supernatural star.
22. “Ride” by White Lies (Lana Del Rey cover)
24. “Hot Line Bling” by Sufjan Stevens ft. Gallant (Drake cover). An awkward way to end the Carrie & Lowell concert.
26. “Bye Bye Bye” by Further Seems Forever (*NSYNC cover)
27. "Hemorrhage" by RED (Fuel cover)
27. “To Be Alone with You”  by Frank Watkinson (Sufjan Stevens cover). I heard about this cover on Good Christian Fun
