“Rewind” by The Amazing, Sunday, January 21, 2024

The Amazing is an Indie progressive rock band from Sweden. My dad told me about them, comparing them to the much more popular band The War on Drugs. The band released their first record in 2009 and after a five-year hiatus, The Amazing released three singles last year. Today’s song, “Rewind,” comes from their 2018 record, In Transit. Filled with long, jam tracks and atmosphere-building guitars, the record is a relaxing record for background music suitable for reading a novel on a winter afternoon. I couldn’t find the lyrics for “Rewind” online, so I had to transcribe them on Genius. I would appreciate any corrections. The song seems to be about remembering a lover who is no longer with the speaker, and with the guitars, it seems that the memory gives the speaker fond memories. Today, we’re going to extend that warm feeling with Winter, Part II, a playlist for the second half of the winter from January to March. I hope that these songs help you through the dreariest months.

“September” by Spoken, Wednesday, September 28, 2022

Image
Spoken formed in 1996 and signed to CCM singer-songwriter Crystal Lewis 's Metro 1 label the following year. The band's early music was influenced by Rage Against the Machine and P.O.D., mostly consisting of rap-core and nu metal. After releasing three studio records and a greatest hits compilation through Metro 1, the band signed to Tooth & Nail Records in 2003 and released their fourth studio record, A Moment of Imperfect Clarity .   A CHANCE TO CHANGE THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT. Spoken's fourth record, A Moment of Imperfect Clarity  developed the band's sound from a rap-rock, nu metal band to a melodic post-hardcore band. With the Tooth & Nail years during the explosion of the record label and the mass-marketability of Christian Rock, Spoken gained a greater audience. Also with the backing of the record company, the production on their Tooth & Nail albums increased significantly. On the first Tooth & Nail record for spoken, the band worked with Garth ...

“Plot Twist” (첫 만남은 계획대로 되지 않아) by TWS, Tuesday, June 11, 2024

TWS (pronounced two-us or in hangeul 투어스)  debuted earlier this year on Pledis Entertainment , an independently-operated sub-label of Hybe Corporation . Today all successful K-pop group members promote their group on social media, but the concept of Pledis’s latest boy band was to release “boyhood pop,” or pop music that “captures the daily stories of boys.” Furthering this concept, the group uses the tagline: “twenty-four seven with us.” The group is well-marketed as the cool boyfriends of voyeuristic K-pop fans. With members ranging from 16 to 20, TWS serves as a fifth (or fifth?)-generation K-pop group, marketed to middle school and high school students, which can be seen in their highly-stylized music video “ Plot Twist .” The video features the group living in dormitory-style quarters and attending a co-educational high school. FIRST ENCOUNTERS ARE ALWAYS HARD.   Lyrically, "Plot Twist" by TWS is about the awkwardness and nervousness of first encounters. The lyrics de...

“L’AMOUR DE MA VIA” by Billie Eilish, Thursday, September 26, 2024

Image
After “ Lunch ” and an afternoon in the park observing “ Birds of a Feather ,” it’s time to spend the rest of the afternoon settled into a small café.  The entertainment is provided by a girl singing a song that sounds much older than her years. The song vaguely seems like a popular European jazz song from the 1940s. Perhaps it was a hit on a regional radio station. The young singer croons of a breakup. But then you black out and awaken in a discotheque. It’s the same day but several hours later. People are dancing. You notice on stage the singer looks familiar. She’s the same girl from earlier at the café. But her hair is different. She’s wearing a wig? But she doesn’t sound cool like before. She sounds empowered with her electronic voice and angry . You have just experienced one of the weirdest moments in pop music in 2024. Billie Eilish ’s “ L’AMOUR DE MA VIE .” FELT SORRY FOR YOU WHEN I LOOKED INTO YOUR EYES. Many of the songs on Billie Eilish’s HIT ME HARD AND SOFT are rumore...
