With over a billion streams for his hits " Wolves " and " Silence " and 1.8 billion streams for his song with  Bastille , " Happier ,"  Marshmello 's collaboration with the  Jonas Brothers  is on the path to being a mega Spotify hit, with nearly 600 million streams as of writing this post. In 2015,  Chris Comstock  began publishing remixes of songs online, gaining fame under the pseudonym Marshmello. When he performed as a DJ, he wore a white bucket shaped like the confectionary treat. In 2017, Comstock's identity was confirmed by  Forbes ,  however, Comstock continues all public appearances with a bucket covering his head.   I'M THE TYPE TO GET NAKED.  Nick   and   Joe Jonas   each get a verse on "Leave Before You Love Me," while the eldest brother,   Kevin , plays guitar and sings back up. "Sucker" by Jonas Brothers, Tuesday, March 28, 2023

In 2019, The  Jonas Brothers broke their nearly six-year hiatus and returned with first the single " Sucker ," an album titled Happiness Begins , and an Amazon documentary titled  Chasing Happiness .  The Jonas Brothers had been a massively successful band in the late '00s and early '10s, but had a niche audience of mostly teenage girls through Radio Disney and Nickelodeon  as well as a few Christian radio stations.  I'M A SUCKER FOR ALL THE SUBLIMINAL THINGS. What was the demand for the reunited Jonas Brothers? Like countless childhood stars from the Disney or Nickelodeon universe, Kevin , Joe , and Nick Jonas grew out of their tween image. Nick's solo career was the most successful of the brothers, but that success also included acting and modeling and ultimately becoming a thirst-trap for the gay community. The albums X2 and Last Year Was Complicated tackled mature material beyond anything he sang about with his brothers. Similarly, Joe found success wit

The Jonas Brothers decided to break up in 2013. It was the end of a squeaky-clean Disney pop era when the brothers started forging solo careers. For Nick Jonas , the youngest of the brothers, success came easy: acting, modeling, and hit singles all in his own right. The oldest Jonas ( Kevin, Jr .) mostly worked on business ventures outside of music. But today, we're focusing on the middle child, Joe Jonas , who, unlike Nick, couldn't ride the fame of the Jonas name to instant stardom. TALK TO ME BABY. What did work for Joe was forming a new band, DNCE  in 2015. Joe Jonas formed the group with his roommate at the time, drummer  Jack Lawless . The band added the lead guitarist from Jordan Sparks ' touring band, JinJoo Lee . She had known the Jonas Brothers since Sparks had opened for them. The final member, Cole Whittle came from the glam-rock band Semi Precious Weapon , and joined DNCE because of Jonas's connection with Semi Precious Weapon's lead singer Justin Tra

2022+ Playlist, featuring "I Don't Live Here Anymore" by The War on Drugs ft. Lucius, Wednesday, January 19, 2022

In October of last year, The War on Drugs returned after four years with their critically-acclaimed album, I Don't Live Here Anymore . The title track and lead single features indie pop group Lucius as backing vocals on the chorus.  Like their previous works, such as  A Deeper Understanding  (2017) and    Lost in the Dream   (2014),  The War on Drugs is able to play two chords back to back for six minutes and create a song that you never want to end. Those two chords create a warm cadence that's like a bonfire on a cold fall night. And that's reason enough to curl up with a blanket and enjoy The War on Drugs all day long. I NEED A CHANCE TO BE REBORN.  However, unlike their previous works, today's song " I Don't Live Here Anymore ," to me, sounds like an anachronistic '80s or early '90s hit. It's kind of like what Mic the Snare said about " Blinding Lights ": "It's just like that one song. Uh? Which one?" Is it "

"I Feel You" by Wonder Girls, Thursday, June 10, 2021

The whirlwind career of Wonder Girls is an interesting read. They were the first South Korean pop group to chart on Billboard 's Hot 100  and toured with the Jonas Brothers ; their career looked like it would be quite promising. But the members wouldn't stick around. The band originally had 4Minute member Hyuna, but her solo career would pull the singer in another direction. Then there was Sunmi, the singer who turned to K-pop to make support her family after her father died of complications of tuberculosis. But just when the group was blowing up in 2009, she left to focus on her academics. The group went on hiatus after Sunye got married and moved with her husband to Haiti to be missionaries and Sohee left to focus on acting. That was 2013. WHEN I'M ALONE, I FEEL YOUR TOUCH. Korean summer is much like summer in North Carolina and Tennessee with a few key differences. The temperature climbs steadily throughout the spring. April can be pleasant, but my first year in Chunche

"Dance or Die" (The Secret Handshake Han Valen Remix) by Family Force 5, Monday, May 3, 2021

In 2006, Family Force 5 debuted with their brand of 'crunk,' rap-rock punk that was comical, dancey, awkward, and overall unique. You'd be hard-pressed to find much Christian Rock on  Business Up Front/Party in the Back . Most of the songs are about dancing in the club and falling in love. While pretty innocent, it was one of the first times a Christian Rock band invited its listeners to the club. Known for their outrageous live shows and touring with the likes of Cobra Starship , 30h!3 , Cash Cash , Breathe Carolina , and The Secret Handshake , the band took a stylistic left turn when they released their sophomore record on Tooth & Nail Records in 2008. Dance or Die has much less crunk, more singing, and fewer joke songs. The band started taking themselves seriously on this record, but looking back, I wonder who it was for? THEY TRY TO TAKE OUR LIVES, BUT WE WILL SURVIVE . Family Force 5 is a rock band, but in their live shows they functioned as a boyband. In 2006-

“This Is Heaven” by Nick Jonas, Saturday, March 6, 2021

Chasing Happiness   is a documentary telling the story of the ups and downs of the Jonas Brothers ' career. Even though I was not a fan of the Disney Channel stars, CH was a telling human story about faith, family, and fame. Debuting in 2006, Kevin, Joe , and Nick took tween girl's hearts by storm. I was, however, within almost the right demographic to completely ignore the band's existence. While I was off at college listening to MGMT and Fleet Foxes , the Jonas Brothers meant a whole lot to the younger millennials. I say almost the perfect demographic because the band gave a lot of press to their Christian upbringing. Some of the Christian publications I read praised the young men as they wore their purity rings and kept a squeaky clean image. But there was a lot more to that story. IF YOU TOLD ME THAT MY FATE WAS ON YOUR FINGERTIPS, THEN, I WOULDN'T BELIEVE YOU.  Last week Nick Jonas hosted and performed two songs on Saturday Night Live . After being introduced b

For today’s blog post, I am going to assign a lot of homework. By the end of the lesson, you will know all about purity culture and how it affected a generation or two of evangelicals. The Cliff’s Notes version: purity culture is the belief that teenagers should wait until they are married in a heterosexual marriage. That is the only way to be blessed by God. Purity culture was steeped in evangelical and even crossed over to pop culture until the late 2000s. There were rallies called True Love Waits, and there were songs like Rebecca St. James' " Wait for Me ." Some may even recall The Jonas Brothers wore purity rings, which were quite common among evangelical teenagers, and parishioners of the 20th-century doctrine. The idea was you wore the purity ring until you replaced it with a wedding ring. The Jonas Brothers have since taken them off. YOU THINK I'M PRETTY WITHOUT ANY MAKEUP ON . One of my favorite podcasts, Good Christian Fun , talks about Christian pop cul
