"Shine" by Kim Sung Kyu (updated repost), Wednesday, September 25, 2024

Image
In high school,  Kim Sung-kyu , the future leader of the boy band  Infinite , had to hide his vocal practice from his parents. In high school, he sang with some of his friends in a rock band. When he graduated he left his hometown of Jeonju in hopes of having a career in music in Seoul. After failing an audition for  SM Entertainment , he tried out for the label  Woolim Entertainment . He hoped to be a rock singer like his future label mate,  Nell . On the day of his audition, though, he was suffering from appendicitis. Determined to make it as a singer, he sang through the pain and went to the hospital after the audition finished. Rather than cultivating Kim's rock talents, the record label placed him as the leader of their first boy band, Infinite. Throughout the group's tenure, they would flirt with rock music; however, it wasn't until Sung-Kyu's debut EP,  Another Me ,  that he would be able to make the kind of music he envisioned.  WHENEVER THIS TIME OF YEAR COMES,

“Newton’s Apple” by Nell, Friday, November 17, 2023

In February of 2014, Nell released their album Newton’s Apple , which was a culmination of a theme the band had explored on two EPs starting in 2012. The band broke their conscription-imposed hiatus in 2012 with the album Slip Away , released in April. In December, the band was back with a four-song EP Holding onto Gravity , the first in their gravity series. Next, the band released the EP Escaping Gravity in 2013. Newton’s Apple was the band’s full-length follow up to 2012’s Slip Away. Released as a two-disc album, the first disc contained new songs, and the second disc contained the two EPs Holding onto Gravity and Escaping Gravity, making a total of 21 songs loosely based on gravity. The title track , was an electronic ballad in English, comparing falling for the subject of the song "like Newton's apple hit the ground." "Run (운영) by Nell (넬), Friday, September 8, 2023 (updated repost)

After a hiatus that allowed each member of the group to complete their conscription for the Korean military,   Nell   reappeared in 2012 with their fifth album   Slip Away  in April. By the end of the year, the band started their 3-EP   Gravity  series. Their second EP in the series,  Escaping Gravity ,  was released on June 10, 2013.   Escaping Gravity  gave the band a different tone. The lead single, " Ocean of Light " was the most optimistic Nell track they had released up until that point. On August 7th, the band released a single that they recorded for the   MBC   drama   2 W eeks .  The upbeat song sounded like it could have been recorded during the same sessions for   Escaping Gravity  with its guitar and keyboard production and fast tempo. " Run " sets up the show as the song appears in the action sequence before the story begins and also is played at the end of the episode as we see the protagonist framed for murder. “Time Lapse” by Taeyeon, Saturday, September 17, 2022 (Partial Repost)

Bright, happy music is what you could describe  Taeyeon 's 2015 debut EP,  I .  The label also fits for her debut studio album, 2017's  My Voice .  However, amid the happy, soaring melodies, there is a twinge of wistful nostalgia in the lyrics. Songs like the lead single " Fine " and the standout track " Time Lapse ," give the Girls' Generation singer a mature sound. Taeyeon's solo career is more about ballads, but the occasional electro-pop song sounds more grown up than her bubblegum pop days in the once biggest K-pop girl group. BIRTHDAYS HAVE PASSED SEVERAL TIMES .  The title of Taeyeon's debut album, My Voice,  alludes to her relationship with her standout feature. In middle school, Taeyeon's principal encouraged the young singer to pursue her talents and convinced her parents to invest in their daughter's talents. This investment came to mean a Sunday drive from Jeonju to Seoul, a 2-and-a-half-hour drive each direction, for Taeyeo

“Cherry Blossom Ending” (벚꽃엔딩) by Busker Busker (버스커버스커), Tuesday, April 5, 2022

When moving to another country, it's important to try many new things and fully immerse yourself in the culture. The number of new experiences you get within the first months will prove invaluable to your adaptation. That being said, even the most culturally open people will feel a little homesick. In August, I will have lived in South Korea for ten years, and has the time flown! But as the cherry blossoms start to fall, I'm reminded of what made me love this country, and how I had to adapt. It may be best tied to an album by a three-piece pop band of busking young men from a university in Cheonan, South Korea. This is my story with Busker Busker . TODAY, LET’S WALK ON THIS STREET . Busker Busker formed when singer-songwriter Jang Beom-june and bassist Kim Hyung-tae joined an English instructor teaching at their university, Brad Moore as the band’s drummer. The band previously performed under the moniker Pinky Pinky, but when the band’s drummer went to serve in the country’s

Year of the Tiger Playlist: songs [loosely] about cats including "Say So" by Doja Cat ft. Nicki Minaj, Tuesday, February 1, 2022

Image
Amala Ratana Zandile Dlamini was b orn to a Jewish mother and a Zulu father, who, according to him returned to South Africa in hopes of his family following him, but according to Dlamini, a.k.a Doja Cat , he abandoned his family. Doja Cat produced music on Soundcloud at the beginning of her career. In 2019, her single " Say So ," today's representative song topped the Billboard Hot 100 . What the hell is a doja cat? I thought. I certainly was getting too old to keep up with pop music. Turns out, three years later, "Say So," is hella catchy. And with an interesting Wikipedia page full of lived experience, I wonder if there's a little treasure in a discography that, to me, originally just sounded like music for cats in heat. Time will tell. YOU AIN'T COMIN' OUT YOUR SHELL. We're entering another playlist-heavy month, and to kick it off, I'm sharing my AppleMusic playlist I created several years ago about cats. Why cats? It was kind of a gift

추천한 K-pop Starter Pack featuring "Honestly..." by Eric Nam and 25+ other songs, Monday, January 10, 2022

여러분 안녕하세요? 오늘 새 플레이리스트를 소개할 게요. I'm going to introduce my second playlist-in-a-playlist, some of my K-pop recommendations that I've written about last year. Unlike 2021+, 추천한 K-pop will be a fluid playlist, updated as I write about other tracks. Again, I'll be restricting myself to one track per artist, but the artist may be featured on another track. For example, I had to choose between "Fake Love" or "Lights" by BTS, but I can add "My Universe" by Coldplay featuring BTS, without breaking the rules. The same goes for solo artists who are also part of a boy/girl band, so both EXO and Girls' Generation will appear along with their members D.O. and Taeyeon. Also, some of the tracks aren't in Korean, but they are made by bands that also have tracks in Korean.  I will list my original track list below and make a few comments, but I'll also leave a link to the original blog post. First, here is the playlist: 1. " Honestly " b
