추천한 K-pop Starter Pack featuring "Honestly..." by Eric Nam and 25+ other songs, Monday, January 10, 2022

여러분 안녕하세요? 오늘 새 플레이리스트를 소개할 게요. I'm going to introduce my second playlist-in-a-playlist, some of my K-pop recommendations that I've written about last year. Unlike 2021+, 추천한 K-pop will be a fluid playlist, updated as I write about other tracks. Again, I'll be restricting myself to one track per artist, but the artist may be featured on another track. For example, I had to choose between "Fake Love" or "Lights" by BTS, but I can add "My Universe" by Coldplay featuring BTS, without breaking the rules. The same goes for solo artists who are also part of a boy/girl band, so both EXO and Girls' Generation will appear along with their members D.O. and Taeyeon. Also, some of the tracks aren't in Korean, but they are made by bands that also have tracks in Korean.  I will list my original track list below and make a few comments, but I'll also leave a link to the original blog post. First, here is the playlist: 1. " Honestly " b

"Time Spent Walking Through Memories" (기억을 걷는 시간) by Nell (넬), Saturday, September 18, 2021

Kim Jong-won, singer of the South Korean soft-rock band Nell makes a third entry for the month. The writer of Taeyeon's " Time Lapse " and Kim Sung-Kyu's " Shine ," knows how to write an autumny, nostalgic track. Nell became known for their bleak music in the early 2000s. Their release of 2008's Separation Anxiety is no exception. "Time Spent Walking Through Memories" would become one of Nell's most recognizable songs. However, conscription would force the band on to go on hiatus before making their comeback in 2012, changing their sad tune to the uplifting, anthemic "Ocean of Light." "Time Spent Walking" sees singer Kim Jong-won wax poetic, describing the loss of love, in similar manner to "Time Lapse" and "Shine." "Time Spent Walking," however, has a calmer, lullaby quality to the soft piano and the ending "La La"s.  FROM THE VISION OF A STRANGER PASSING BY. You probably still r

"Shine" by Kim Sung-Kyu (김성규), Friday, September 17, 2021

In high school, Kim Sung-kyu , the future leader of the boy band Infinite, had to hide his vocal practice from his parents. In high school he sang in a rock band with some of his friends. When he graduated he left his hometown of Jeonju in hopes of having a career in music in Seoul. After failing an audition for SM Entertainment, he tried out for label Woolim Entertainment. His hope was to be a rock singer like his future label mates, Nell . On the day of his audition, though, he was suffering from appendicitis. Determined to make it as a singer, he sang through the pain and went to the hospital after the audition finished. Rather than cultivating Kim's rock talents, the record label decided to place him as the leader of the their first boy-band, Infinite. Throughout the group's tenure, they would flirt with rock music; however, it wasn't until Sung-Kyu's debut EP, Another Me , that he would be able to make the kind of music he envisioned.  WHENEVER THIS TIME OF YEAR C

“Time Lapse” by Taeyeon (태연), Sunday, August 5, 2021

Bright, happy music is what you could describe Taeyeon 's 2015 debut EP, I . The label also fits for her debut studio album, 2017's My Voice . However, amid the happy, soaring melodies, there is a twinge of wistful nostalgia in the lyrics. Songs like the lead single " Fine " and the standout track "Time Lapse," give the Girls' Generation singer a mature sound, quite far from the realm of the girl band's dance-pop sounds. "Time Lapse" was composed by Nell's lead singer, Kim Jong-wan for the soprano singer. Taeyeon also released a cover of Nell's "Time Spent Walking Through Memories," one of the band's biggest hits, as a bonus track on the My Voice deluxe edition. The title of Taeyeon's debut album alludes to her relationship with her standout feature. In middle school, her principal encouraged her to pursue her talents and convinced her parents to invest in their daughter's talents. This investment came to mean

We've talked Taeyeon before, whether it was her melancholy ballad, " Blue " or with her group Girls' Generation singing " Mr. Mr. "  Unlike solo male singers, like D.O. , female solo singers often do better than their girl groups. With the exception of Girls' Generation, Twice , and BlackPink , Korean girl groups often lose steam before the boy groups. Why? Generally speaking these days Korean teenage girls are buying most of the music, whereas teenage boys are spending most of their money on phone game credits. Girl groups serve as a kind of aspiration for teenage girls and some boys buy girl group merchandise, but for all the girl group merchandise sold, multiply it by at least ten for the cute and cuddly image of boy groups. Solo female singers are often taken more seriously in acting roles apart from their groups, and without the branding of the bubble gum image, take a mature approach to the music they perform.    SUDDENLY I LOOK AT THE CLOCK. When March comes, it either appears as a lion or a lamb. It's been a mild winter where I live and today there's a light spring shower. Later the rains are supposed to get harder. Is this the lion? Or is it a lamb? I've also taken a more superstitious meaning to this saying. In Korea, it's the beginning of the school year; however, March 1st is a national holiday. Will the school year start out smoothly or with its own set of thundershowers? If it starts out smoothly, is trouble ahead? Think about last year. Covid Cases increased at the beginning of the month and started to drop slightly by the end of the month as social distancing measures were put in place. However, the month began in fear and ended in existential crisis. So much uncertainty leans on this temperamental spring month as the air warms, clashing with Arctic blasts. And if you throw climate change into the mix, who knows what we're going to get? From the Texas snowstorms to the warmest February on recor
