“Sprite” by COIN, Friday, October 7, 2022 (repost)

Following up their 2020  album,  Dreamland ,   COIN  dropped three EPs in early 2021, leading up to their full album,  Rainbow Mixtape ,  released in April. The band wrote and recorded their follow-up album after their 2020 supporting tour  for  Dreamland  was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  Singer  Chase Lawerence  sold his house at the beginning of the pandemic and moved back to his childhood home in Virginia where he began writing music for the next record. The band recorded many songs, yet the songs didn't seem to have a theme. “We broke it down to its elementary form and felt like colors represented the lyrical and sonic themes,” Lawerence told  American Songwriter.   Each song corresponded with a color and was released on three EPs, though the second and third are combined on Apple Music.  Red-Orange, Blue-Green,  and  Indigo-Violet  make up the three sections of the band's fourth studio album SUNRISE IN ORBIT . Rather than telling a story, like in their 2020 song

"Bad Love" by Key + 2022+:AppleMusic Edition, Sunday, June 12, 2022

This is certainly a gimmick to publish more content, but I was listening to 2022+ on Spotify on Friday and on a lark, I thought that I really wanted the AppleMusic version. Also, it's been half a year since I talked about the playlist directly, and it's undergone quite a bit of alteration since then. I tried to arrange the songs into a cohesive playlist, but when I'm working with different genres, it's a little hard. Also, I made a few deliberate choices to change the songs to offer more variety to the playlist. So instead of " Sine from Above ," I included " Babylon " by Lady Gaga. I hope AppleMusic listeners enjoy this list. Maybe a YouTube list is next instead of a repost from last year. 1. " Bad Love " by Key is today's song. It's an infectious dance song that I wrote about last year. It's worth a repeat.  2. " Shivers " by Ed Sheeran  3. "Babylon" by Lady Gaga 4. "Sometimes" by MUNA 5. "

Acceptance 's story about the band that called it quits before they realized made the band a legend. In 2014, Jesusfreakhideout posted their top " One Album Wonders ," and Acceptance's Phantoms topped the list. According to lead singer Jason Vena , when he sat down with  Billy Power   on Urban Achiever Podcast  in 2015, the lead singer recounted about how he had no idea the cult status the band then had in the scene. In various other interviews, Vena talked about how other bands, namely A Loss for Words and All Time Low inspired him to consider an Acceptance reunion.  LAST SEASON OF THIS MASQUERADE. In 2005, Acceptance after their failed attempt at major label stardom, Vena took a job in Seattle outside of music. The band dissolved, some forming side projects with other musicians. Lead guitarist Christian McAlhaney talked with Josh Coats on Your PUSH Coach Podcast in 2020, talking about what made him successful in three bands and other projects. These projects

The Jonas Brothers decided to break up in 2013. It was the end of a squeaky-clean Disney pop era when the brothers started forging solo careers. For Nick Jonas , the youngest of the brothers, success came easy: acting, modeling, and hit singles all in his own right. The oldest Jonas ( Kevin, Jr .) mostly worked on business ventures outside of music. But today, we're focusing on the middle child, Joe Jonas , who, unlike Nick, couldn't ride the fame of the Jonas name to instant stardom. TALK TO ME BABY. What did work for Joe was forming a new band, DNCE  in 2015. Joe Jonas formed the group with his roommate at the time, drummer  Jack Lawless . The band added the lead guitarist from Jordan Sparks ' touring band, JinJoo Lee . She had known the Jonas Brothers since Sparks had opened for them. The final member, Cole Whittle came from the glam-rock band Semi Precious Weapon , and joined DNCE because of Jonas's connection with Semi Precious Weapon's lead singer Justin Tra

“Shivers” by Ed Sheeran, Thursday, April 7, 2022

Opening with a the late '90s pop-rock-sounding " Tides ," Ed Sheeran 's fourth record = seems to change genres with every track. Back in October of last year, I asked the question about whether or not Ed Sheeran could successfully integrate all the musical styles he's done in the past and make a cohesive album that would appeal both broadly to all music fans and more specifically to die-hard fans. What I found today was that most of the songs individually are good. But as an album the songs don't play together save for the common themes of falling in love with his wife Cherry, the death of family members, isolation due to the Covid-19 pandemic, recovery from addiction, and the birth of his daughter Lyra.   I WANNA DRINK THAT SMILE. The eclectic mix of singles Sheeran released before the album dropped--" Bad Habits " and " Shivers " sounding similar to  ÷ 's singles and " Visiting Hours " recalling the more sentimental moods

“This Is Heaven” by Nick Jonas, Monday, February 14, 2022

In 2018  Nick Jonas   and  Priyanka Chopra Jonas   married in two ceremonies. The ceremonies took place in India and represented the religious backgrounds of both the Bollywood-turned-Hollywood actress and the singer/actor. The first ceremony was Christian, taking place on December 1, and the second was Hindu on December 2. In 2019, Nick and the two other Jonas Brothers  released their first album in ten years. Nick's solo career had heated up after the Jonas hiatus, but a reunited Jonas Brothers was even more commercially exciting. In 2021, Nick Jonas was back with a solo record, this time dealing with the themes of isolation due to the pandemic, but mostly about his love for his bride. I'M ON MY KNEES AND I CAN'T STOP NOW. From the moment I heard Nick Jonas's second single from Spaceman ,  " This Is Heaven ," on his Saturday Night Live performance, I started making connections to what I knew about the Jonas Brothers' religious upbringing, particularly t

"Madness" by Anchor & Braille, Saturday, February 5, 2022 + Lovers' Quarrel Playlist

In 2020, Stephen Christian released his fourth Anchor & Braille album, Tension .  When he released his third A&B project, Songs for the Late Night Drive Home in 2016, many of his fans were still mourning the disbandment of Anberlin . But starting in 2018, Anberlin had started to play one-off shows and even started touring the next year. In 2020, the band was supposed to announce a tour with Memphis May Fire and perform at several festivals. But in lieu of the pandemic, the band started a livestream concert series. While Anberlin was active, Christian released Tension, an album of the most straight-forward pop songs Christian has released to date.  TRY TO EXPLAIN YOURSELF TO A STONE WALL. Last year, I wrote about 13 love songs leading up to Valentine's Day. This year, I'm not sticking to that format, but as Valentine's Day approaches, I thought I'd make a few playlists compiling the love songs I've written about.  1. " Madness " by Anchor &a

The Musical Equivalent to a Grilled Cheese Sandwich Playlist featuring "Beth/Rest" by Bon Iver, Sunday, January 30, 2022

Image
On a cold winter's day, in the middle of the stress of house-hunting, I thought I'd make a playlist for those bad days that aren't quite depressing and not quite angry. Today's featured song is " Beth/Rest " by Bon Iver. I resisted putting this song on my Pseudo '80s Playlist  because, despite the soft-rock keys and saxophone, the vocal distortion sounds more of a product of its time than a retro track. Some of the songs on today's list will be a little sad, but something about them gives me strength rather than pushes me further into a despair. As always, I'll put the links for each song. I'm going to stick to tracks I've written about and add to this list as I feel the song is appropriate. First, I'll share my Spotify playlist: 1. "Beth/Rest" by Bon Iver is the representative song of the day.  2. "Tell Me How" by Paramore is a sad song, but the resolve at the end leaves the power in Haley Williams' hands. 3.

“Leave Before You Love Me” by Marshmello & Jonas Brothers, Wednesday, January 26, 2022

With over a billion streams for his hits " Wolves " and " Silence " and 1.5 billion streams for his song with Bastille , " Happier ," Marshmello 's collaboration with the Jonas Brothers  " Leave Before You Love Me " is on the path to being a mega Spotify hit, with over 271 million streams as of writing this post. In 2015, Chris Comstock began publishing remixes of songs online, gaining fame under the pseudonym Marshmello. When he performed as a DJ, he wore a white bucket shaped like the confectionary treat. In 2017, Comstock's identity was confirmed by Forbes, however, Comstock continues all public appearances with a bucket covering his head. I'M THE TYPE TO GET NAKED. Nick and Joe Jonas each get a verse on "Leave Before You Love Me," while the eldest brother, Kevin , plays guitar and sings back up. Some of the conflict resolved over the course of the documentary film Chasing Happiness deals with Kevin feeling slighted by
