“Ojos Marrones” by Lasso ft. Sebastián Yatra, Thursday, June 6, 2024 + Música Española Favorita Playlist

Image
Venezuelan-born, Mexico-City based artist Andrés Vicente de Jesús Lazo Uslar goes by the name Lasso . He’s been recording since 2009, releasing four studio albums. His latest, Eva , was released last year. Teaming up with Colombian singer Sebastián Yatra on a re-recorded version of his hit “ Ojos Marrones ” as a bonus track on Eva . I instantly connected with the song’s forlorn guitar which plays throughout the song. The atmosphere of the song reminded me of both Deas Vail ’s “ Wake Up and Sleep ” and Taylor Swift ’s Speak Now Vault version “ I Can See You ,” on which Jack Antonoff plays a guitar in a similar, mysterious way. The slight rasp of Lasso’s voice brings the melancholy romantic lyrics to life. This is the first Spanish language song I’ve blogged about. I’ve been getting into some Spanish songs lately, so today I’m going to make a playlist of some of my recent finds. I hope you enjoy them too.  Check out the playlist on Spotify.

“California” by Lana Del Rey (repost), Thursday, April 18, 2024

Lana Del Rey 's magnum opus,  Norman Fucking Rockwell!   was released in September of 2018 and earned the singer-songwriters the acclaim she had been laying the foundation for since 2012's  Born to Die.   A year after her lackluster album/ collection of good songs  Lust for Life ,  she released the first single from  NFR,  " The Mariner's Apartment Complex " and quickly followed it with another single, the 9:38 song " Venice Bitch ." She began building hype for the record, a cohesive record using the Americana formula Del Rey uses best, a year before its release. The singer awkwardly promoted the album in October of 2018, 11 months before its release, at an  Apple Keynote event . The singer wasn't allowed to say the name of her upcoming album or its single, which she played censored, "Venice Bitch," as  Jack Antonoff   played the piano. “Wildest Dreams” (Taylor’s Version) by Taylor Swift, Saturday, October 7, 2023 (Updated Repost)

In 2021 the 2015 hit “ Wildest Dreams ” became a  TikTok   trend.  Of course this was in the middle of Swift’s massive project to release re-recordings of her studio records due to her inability to buy the rights to her original recordings. In the spring of last year, she released a massive re-recording of  Fearless , the album that propelled the then teen singer to being one of the biggest internationally-recognized music stars. Responding to the TikTok trend, Swift posted her own take on it with the  re-recorded version , despite the fact that the singer had stated that she would release her version of  Red ,  1989 ’s predecessor and the album that transitioned the singer’s style from Country to Pop, before any of her versions of songs from  1989  would be released.  SAY YOU’LL REMEMBER ME .  We’re still a few weeks away from the release of the  Taylor’s Version  of  1989 . The album officially marked  Taylor Swift  leaving Country music in full pursuit of a pop stardom that had been

“Mood Ring” by Lorde, Wednesday, August 9, 2023

There is little new under the sun when it comes to fashion. In the '00s, '90s fashion of flannels and winter bubble vests gave way to a '70s revival: Bell bottoms or flares, replaced the straight-leg Levis; bold colors replaced the subdued primary colors of the '90s; and gimmicky accessories like bandanas and hoop earrings made a bold statement. Some novelty fashion trends also came back, enter the mood ring. On Lorde 's 2021 record Solar Power , the singer wistfully remembers relics of her childhood in the early '00s in the song " Mood Ring ." Lyrically satirizing the disconnection of the modern world, the acoustic guitar producer Jack Antonoff plays throughout the song harken back to the early '00s pop music.    YOU CAN BURN THE SAGE, AND I'LL CLENSE THE CRYSTALS.    Discussing the first single Lorde dropped from   her third album "Solar Power," Switched on Pop guest Hanif Abdurraqid argues that Lorde isn't a "singer-sin

Coming to the end of the year, it's time to remember some of the musical highlights of 2022. I listened to a lot of music this year and maybe more new music than last year. But there certainly were albums that slipped under the radar. I had every intention of digging into  The Weeknd 's  Dawn FM   ,  but somehow I was never in that dark of a mood to resonate with the characteristics of that record. Today, I'm going to reveal my controversial list. Enjoy! #10 .  The Loneliest Time  by  Carly Rae Jepsen . The latest from the " Call Me Maybe " singer is a record that isn't immediately catchy and could easily fall between the cracks because of all the big releases of this year. The diverse singles showed different camera angles of a maturing pop singer who has solidified her status in music nerd-dom and gay music listeners alike. And with her first explicit labeled song, Jepsen is distancing herself from former tween-friendly aesthetic. I'm sure next year I
