“Easy” (Remix) by Troye Sivan ft. Kacey Musgraves & Mark Ronson, Thursday, August 3, 2023

Image
In October, Troye Sivan will release his first full-length record since 2018's Bloom.  While other pop stars have entered prolific eras with frequent releases, fans have had to wait a long time for new music from Sivan.   His last major release was an EP in 2020 titled In a Dream , but the singer has been releasing singles since then; however, whether or not they will be part of the upcoming work is yet to be disclosed. Sivan's sophomore LP, Bloom , was a celebration of love and gay sex; however, In a Dream is an introspective collection of songs--with the exception of "Stud"--dealing with heartache and a failing relationship.  TELL ME WE'LL MAKE IT THROUGH. The single " Easy " is the second track on In a Dream. The song was remixed by producer Mark Ronson and features a verse by Kacey Musgraves . Sivan had appeared on Musgrave's second Christmas album in 2019, and the reunion between the two singers on the 2020 single not only coincided with S

“Heaven" by Troye Sivan ft. Betty Who, Sunday, July 2, 2023 (Updated Repost)

On   December 4, 2015,  Troye Sivan  released his wildly successful first LP,  Blue      Neighbourhood .  Building a large Internet fanbase,  Blue Neighbourhood      peaked at #7  on the Billboard 200 album chart. The standard edition of  Blue Neighbourhood    contained  3 of the 10 songs from the previously released  Wild  EP . The LP, though, gave Sivan his first US Top 40 single, " Youth ." Four of the ten songs on  Blue   were singles, starting with " Wild ," a remix of which was rereleased with guest vocals by Alessi a   Cara as Sivan's fourth single from the album, which was a major hit in South Korea.     TRUTH RUNS WILD.  The final single, " Heaven ," was released on October 17, 2016. The  Jack Antonoff -produced single features a second verse from fellow Australian pop star,  Betty Who . After Sivan came out in a YouTube video in August of 2013, he became an LGBTQ+ icon, as he processed his sexuality in the lyrics of his music. Part of the pr

“My My My!” by Troye Sivan (Updated repost), Wednesday, June 21, 2023

Following  Blue Neighbourhood ,   Troye Sivan released another collection of songs celebrating queer love in 2018. This time,  Bloom   was less about love in the abstract and more about sex. Songs like the  title track  dealing with anal sex, the Apple Music edition of the album's opener " Seventeen " recalling how the singer lost his virginity to an older man on Grindr when he was seventeen, to a song about his boyfriend who "Tastes like  Lucky Strikes " may take a few listens to understand the euphemisms. SHINE ON, DIAMOND.   Bloom  holds an 85% on  Meta-Critic , meaning that most reviews were favorable. In America, though, Sivan's music mostly is confined to the LGBTQ+ community,  and  Bloom  didn't make a splash in the mainstream pop market. But looking at the promotion, Sivan's team clearly had the young star's sights on conquering the charts.  A track with Ariana Grande , a performance, albeit a polarizing performance, on  Saturday Night

“I’m So Tired” by Lauv ft. Troye Sivan, Tuesday, June 13, 2023

Lauv is somewhere between a household name and an sad-boy indie pop star. With 18 million monthly streams on Spotify, the singer-songwriter certainly has a large fanbase. And with his inclusion on many playlists, he also gets many passive listeners as well. One of the ways that Lauv has collected so many fans is through collaboration. Besides today's collaboration with Troye Sivan , Lauv has collaborated with BTS , Anne-Marie, LANY, Alessia Cara, and many other artists who also have active fan bases.  HURTS LIKE HEAVEN. In April 2020, at the beginning of the pandemic, Ari Staprans Leff , better known as Lauv, spoke with Silverstein 's Shane Told on his podcast Lead Singer Syndrome.   Told usually interviews rock singers, usually part of the emo and punk scenes, but as Told explained, during the pandemic many musicians had more time on their hands to interview, including Lauv who was mostly at home pondering " Modern Loneliness ." But through the interview, Lauv reve

“No Time to Die” by Billie Eilish, Wednesday, May 10, 2023

Around 2018, before I started paying attention to new music, I asked my middle school students who they were listening to these days, and it made me feel very old. There were a few singers I knew-- Charlie Puth , Troye Sivan --but the two top artists I had no idea who they were. The first was Anne-Marie , who, admittedly hadn't made it really big in America. I actually thought that the students liked the easy-listening singer Anne Murray , so I had to play her music for them! WAS I STUPID TO LOVE YOU?   The other artist was Billie Eilish , who hadn't yet released her eventually Grammy-winning album  When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go ?   In the early days, though, I was turned off by the singer's aesthetic: the gothic and neon, the adolescent morbidity. And the styles of her song titles bothered me. I felt that I had entered a new musical world where nothing made sense, that I was looking at the world through the eyes of Generation Z, and I felt not like a Millennial

“Bloom” by Troye Sivan, Thursday, April 6, 2023 (warning: frank discussion of explicit sexual acts)

Spring is a time of youth and renewed life. Flowers are blooming and pollen is swimming in the breeze. We have seen this happen year in and year out, perhaps never really thinking about how Mother Earth is regenerating herself. Indeed sex is all around us as the bees inseminate the flowers in the garden. The vibrancy of springtime in a garden is an appropriate cloak for today's song as Troye Sivan wraps the metaphor of young horniness in the beauty of the natural world in the title track to his second record Bloom . While Sivan's track is undeniably queer, the journey into the garden feels universal--a trip that all will take when leaving youth behind. TAKE A TRIP INTO MY GARDEN.   Troye Sivan's sophomore record, Bloom, takes the singer-songwriter into more adult themes. The singer's previous work Blue Neighbourhood intentionally steered away from overtly sexual topics. When Sivan made the music video trilogy "Wild," "Fools," and "Talk You Dow

"Lucky Strike," by Troye Sivan, Sunday, March 26, 2023 + Spring Vibes Playlist

Image
Today I present a playlist I've been meaning to make for a while. I want to put all of the songs that give me spring vibes in a single playlist. These aren't just songs explicitly about this time of year, but also songs that mention the season. Of course we're going with one song per artist, so unfortunately the equally springlike song  by Troye Sivan " Bloom " won't be making the playlist. This is an ongoing project so expect more songs added as I find them. I will post the playlist below. Enjoy!

“Wild” by Troye Sivan, Tuesday, February 28, 2023

In 2015, Troye Sivan released Wild , an EP of six songs. Three of those songs would be released on Sivan's debut full-length, Blue Neighbourhoods , while the other three would be included on the deluxe edition of the album. Wild was Sivan's second EP signed on a major label, though the then-teenager had been singing, writing his own songs, and producing his own music since he was 12 years old. As a YouTube generation musician, Sivan had grown followers on the platform, his viewers watching his journey discovering his sexuality. Sivan came out in 2013 just before his career took off. LEAVE THESE BLUE NEIGHBORHOODS. The eponymous lead single from Wild  alludes to the upcoming album with the line "blue neighbourhoods," which Sivan has discussed to mean the mundane life in suburbia. In Sivan's case, the city of Perth, Australia is where the singer was raised. Perth is a major city in Australia, with over 2 million people, yet the city is separated from the other ma

“Feel Good Inc.” by Filous ft. LissA (cover of Gorillaz), Monday, July 25, 2022 (partial repost)

Image
You might know  Filous  if you get the bonus tracks of pop singers. He's an Austrian producer, musician, and remixer, and he's remixed  Selena Gomez ,  Troye Sivan ,  Kodaline , and others. For " Feel Good Inc ." Filous teams up with electro-pop singer-songwriter  LissA  to bring a new interpretation to Gorillaz's 2005 hit, " Feel Good Inc. " The song has been covered by multiple artists, and while the original is the best, Filous's cover highlights the melancholy of the song by stripping the song of its bass line and leaning into its minor chord melody. Filous's "FGI" is laidback. It's a perfect coffee shop cover of the track because coffee shop tracks often don't have rapping or words like "ass crack." While today's song of the day is by Filous, it's the artistry of the musicians behind Gorrilaz that makes this song interesting. DON'T STOP. GET IT, GET IT!  In 2001  Blur  frontman  Damon Albarn  and anima

"Weekend" by Taeyeon, Saturday, March 26, 2022 + Weekend Vibes AppleMusic Mix

Image
On Valentine's Day, Taeyeon released her third full-length album, INVU .  This album included her single released last summer " Weekend ," a song about feeling great and enjoying life amidst the everyday hectic routine. Sleeping in late, indulging in coffee and/or cheese cake, and generally "doing whatever I want," "Weekend" is a bubbly K-pop single that welcomes the best two days of the week. And out of a lazy afternoon in bed with my boyfriend singing this song, I chose to be extra lazy and post this track as an excuse to convert my Spotify Friday Vibes  playlist into an AppleMusic Weekend Vibes playlist. Hope you enjoy it! Original tracklist (before future updates): 1. "Weekend" by Taeyeon (the song of the day) 2. " Forest " by Number One Gun 3.  " Take it All Back 2.0 " by Judah & the Lion 4. " Typical " by MUTEMATH 5. " Rings & Roses " by Dabin ft. Conor Byrne 6. " Hymn for the Wee

"Lucky Strike," by Troye Sivan, Thursday, March 10, 2022 [Reworked Repost]

Image
Austra-South African YouTuber-turned pop star and actor  Troye Sivan  creates a kind of infectious electro-pop that brilliantly celebrates love, acceptance, and sexuality. From my vantage point in South Korea, I saw the rise of Sivan's career. With his debut album,  Blue Neighbourhoods ,  Sivan could be heard everywhere in 2016 and not only was his music making an impact, him and fellow LGBT+ singer  Sam Smith  were starting conversations around sexual orientation that would have been considered taboo even five years before. My middle school students, in their free time at school, would often play Sivan's music videos. " Wild ," " Fools ," and " Youth " depict a teenage secret relationship between two boys. Being a teacher at a Christian school and working in a conservative country where it  was illegal for teachers to talk about LGBT+ issues at the time,    undoubtedly these middle school students were trying to press some buttons. Still, with som
